About Newport Spirit Run

The Newport Spirit Run is presented by Newport Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation dedicated to to promoting youth fitness and donating event net proceeds to benefit youth education, youth fitness, and other youth causes.

Led by a volunteer Board of Directors, NMSRI continues the Newport Spirit Run tradition by promoting healthy lifestyles, providing race access opportunities for underprivileged youth and new in 2026, implementing environmentally responsible event measures to protect Upper Newport Bay.

42 Years of Community Impact

Since 1983, Newport Spirit Run has brought together schools, families, runners and the wider Newport Mesa community through a shared focus on fitness, fundraising and community connection.

Originally presented by PTAs from five Newport Beach elementary schools, Newport Spirit Run has grown into one of Orange County’s longest-running community race events.

In 2010, Newport Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI) was established to continue the event and expand its support for schools, youth sports programs and local youth-focused initiatives throughout Newport Mesa and beyond.

NEW in 2026:
The Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) joins Newport Spirit Run as a beneficiary, supporting environmental conservation, restoration and education efforts throughout Upper Newport Bay and its surrounding watershed.

NBC also plays an important role in protecting and restoring areas connected to the Newport Spirit Run race courses, including Big Canyon and the Back Bay environment.

In collaboration with NBC, Newport Spirit Run continues to strengthen its commitment to youth programs and will begin promoting tips for running and walking in an environmentally responsible manner.

Join The Fitness, Fun & Community Impact

Newport Spirit Run invites schools, youth sports programs and youth-focused community initiatives to participate in a Newport Beach event built around fitness, fundraising, environmental responsibility and community connection.

Through participation, beneficiary groups have the opportunity to raise funds, engage families and become part of one of Newport Beach’s most established community race traditions.

Why Steve Loves Newport Spirit Run

A long-standing supporter of Newport Spirit Run and the Newport Mesa running community.

For Steve Scott, Newport Spirit Run is about more than race day.

As America’s Premier Miler, Steve has spent years supporting the event, encouraging participants and celebrating the community spirit that makes Newport Spirit Run unique.

A former UC Irvine track star, Olympian, respected coach and world-record holder for the most sub-4 minute miles, Steve’s connection to Newport Mesa and local running culture runs deep.

Each year, Steve returns to Spirit Run to support runners of all ages, from first-time participants to experienced competitors, helping inspire the next generation through movement, positivity and community involvement.
